Student Matinees
Student Matinees are specially scheduled weekday shows offered to area schools for any Commonweal production playing during the school year.
For only $5 per person, classes receive the following:
•Theatre ticket
•Pre-show workshop by the actors
•Study guide
•Theatre tour and demonstration
•Post-show talk-back
Our goal is to expose every student in our eleven-county region to a professional production at the Commonweal, and come away with a greater understanding of how theatre can teach us about ourselves, each other, and our place in the world.
To book a matinee performance, contact Jill at (507) 467-2905 x206 or jill@commonwealtheatre.org or fill out this matinee request form.

Theatre Skills
Ensemble artists of the Commonweal will teach a two-semester, hands-on, elective Theatre Skills class for high school students to explore the fundamentals of creating theatre. Using our brand new theatre facility as a classroom/laboratory, this course will be offered three Saturdays per month, and will culminate in a full-scale production on our main stage. Credit is obtained through the Lanesboro School District.
Through this course, students will:
- acquire a broad-based knowledge and appreciation of the disciplines of acting, directing, playwriting, design and stage management;
- build confidence in all areas of theatre;
- learn the value of plays as dramatic literature, identifying themes and styles and understanding the playwright’s intent;
- develop critical thinking skills as they learn to evaluate their own and each other’s work;
- develop critical writing skills as they analyze the Commonweal’s productions;
- improve oral communication skills;
- become courteous and engaged audience members;
- contextualize their work through the study of theatre history.
The Theatre Skills class presents an exciting opportunity – the only one of its kind – for the students of our region. For more information, contact our administrative office at (507) 467-2905 x215 or email us.
This class is made possible with contributions from
