The Commonweal, through its New Plays program, fosters the creation of original plays in collaboration with emerging and established playwrights. Focusing primarily on commissioning new works, the Commonweal’s goal is to bring to life on our stage world premiere plays that speak to our community.
The company invites playwrights to spend time with us in our community, working collaboratively with Commonweal artists to develop and refine early drafts of original works, or existing works-in-progress. Informal public readings are scheduled to provide an opportunity for feedback which might steer further development, and promising scripts are given additional rehearsal and workshop support. When the collaborative process yields a fully-realized script, the play may be considered for a full production as part of Commonweal’s main stage season.
