UNCLE VANYA
We are proud to introduce Chekhov to our stage with one of his best known works: a comedy of genteel country folk in the twilight of czarist Russia. On a provincial estate, little disturbs the inhabitants' quiet lives until the head of the family brings home his beautiful new wife.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
I like my plays the way I like my chocolate: bittersweet! In Uncle Vanya, Chekhov masterfully mixes the bitter and the sweet of friendship, love and family, human frailty and heartbreak. All the characters want love! And they are all so rich and complex. Also full of rich layers are the many, still relevant ideas in the play about the environment, men’s and women’s roles in society, and what it means to be a success.
In our modern world, we can sometimes be consumed with everything except the moment at hand. We mourn the past and dream of the future when life is happening right now, all around us. Sometimes we can forget to notice it and live it while we have the time. I really love plays that contain the idea that what we do, who we love and what we say, here and now, are what matter. As Astrov says in Act IV, "this, that we're living, is our life". So when you get hold of a really delicious, rich, layered chocolate, sit back and enjoy! — Lisa Weaver
