Each year, longtime Commonweal resident ensemble member David Hennessey pens a paean in honor of the year’s work, referencing each of the plays we produced in the season. Here is David’s 2017 poem:
A packed plot line from season 29
We had “Waterways” to start ’17,
A touring display. Its themes rippled clean
Through 10-minute plays
And local yarns prais-
Ing H20. ’Prentice Lewis then streamed
Through grand tour de force—a one-actor show:
Thirty-five parts played with skill and gusto!
Ibsen’s last Fest woke
The dead. Plus, we smoked
The bleak endings of all his plays! We flowed
To side-show freak who, though shunned and reviled,
Still modeled a spirit gen’rous and mild.
Next, beauty salon
Showed friends who called on
Steely support from magnolias well-styled.
Crack typist chann’ling her late boss’s words
Puzzled skeptics, but left her undeterred.
Then four ghosts were sued
Because they collude-
Ed, and now it’s work year-round they prefer.
And through it all, we and the town
Walked with Scott and Stela toward healing bound,
All cheering their flag,
As we look to future, we are astound-
Ed we’re near three well-grounded decades here!
To top it all off, great news we hold dear:
With spirits that soared
We won top award
For nonprofits! Thanks to all—a great year!
We want to thank you for a great season, and we hope you’ll join us in 2018 as we celebrate our 30th Season of producing professional live theatre in Lanesboro!
